The trek to Annapurna Base Camp or Sanctuary combines some of the most spectacular mountain scenery with a fascinating insight into the life of middle hill Nepalis.
The other classic trek in the Annapurna region is to the so called Annapurna Sanctuary, the site of the base camp used by expeditions attempting the massive sour face of Annapurna I. A short trek, it can be completed in as little as eight days from Pokhara.
The best time to visit Sanctuary is during the main trekking seasons of spring and autumn but since the route is not a circuit, the trail, and the teahouses, can become crowded at these times. Winter treks are possible but at any time trekkers must beware of snowfall and avalanches that can block the narrow entrance to the sanctuary.
This trek is usually started and ended in Pokhara but it can also be made a part of the Annapurna Circuit or the Jomsom trek by trekking from Tatopani through Ghorepani and Tadapani and joining the main Sanctuary trail at Chomrong. For maximum enjoyment, allow twelve or fourteen days for the trek, which allows, time for exploration inside the Sanctuary and also the chance to extend the route on the Ghorepani and Poon Hill. Trekkers travelling this route must obtain an ACAP entry permit either from Kathmandu or Pokhara before commencing the trek.
To start the trek at Pokhara there are a number of choices of route. Perhaps the best is to drive to Naudanda Phedi where the trail up to Dhampus will be found. The route passes through a number of Gurung settlements including Dhampus, Pothana and Landrung. At Landrung the choice is to cross to Ghandruk, a descent and subsequent climb involving several hundred meters of elevation change, or to continue on up the Modi Khola through Naya Pul. Both trails join at Chomrong at the foot of the gorge leading to the Sanctuary. An additional attraction on the Naya pul trail is a very welcoming hot spring half way to Chomrong.
From Chomrong there is only one trail, which follows the ever-narrowing Modi Khola to finally enter the Sanctuary. Due to the altitude gain, two nights must be spent between Chomrong and the Sanctuary in order to avoid the risk of AMS. There are a number of settlements in the valley, providing ample accommodation. However, during winter it is wise to check at Chomrong in case the teahouses up the valley have closed for the off season.
The trail up the Modi Khola passes through dense stands of rhododendron and bamboo for the first day. By the time the large rock overhang, known as Hinku Cave, is reached the vegetation has thinned and the gorge narrowed to be only a few hundred meters wide. Steep, snow-clad ridges falling from Hiunchuli on the left and Machhapuchhre on the right form the entrance to the Sanctuary. As you pass through the “gate” and enter the Sanctuary, you find yourself in a huge amphitheatre enclosed by a solid wall of snow capped peaks which include Annapurna I, II, III and IV plus the fishtailed spire of Machhapuchhre. Teahouses are available at Machhapuchhre Base Camp, just inside the Sanctuary, or at Annapurna Base Camp, a further two hours beyond. Spend at least one full day inside the Sanctuary. Side trips across the South Annapurna glacier, north from Annapurna Base Camp allow for an even better appreciation of this unique place. Return by the same route to Chomrong where you can choose to retrace your outward steps or deviate through either Ghandruk or Ghorepani.

We’ll depart Kathmandu this morning by private van or bus for Pokhara. The scenic drive will take us through scenic countryside to the famous lakeside city where we can relax for the evening and savor the spectacular mountain views over Fewa Lake.
After our short drive to Nayapul we begin our trek, walking via Birethanti through a series of villages along the KhumnuKhola. The day ends in the Gurung village of Ghandruk, surrounded by spectacular views of Machhapuchare, Annapurna south, and Hiulchuli.
An hour’s climb from Ghandruk followed by a steep descent takes us to the banks of the KimronKhola. After a further climb we’ll arrive in the stunningly scenic vicinity of Chhomrong, a charming town nestled near the base of several towering Himalayan peaks.
The terrain takes on a more remote feel as we ascend further into the foothills. A river crossing over suspension bridge will take us through thick forests to SinuwaDanda, Khuldighar, and finally to Dovan.
The river is far below us now as we continue up the side of the lush valley. Crossing several streams, we pass through a serene expanse of oak and rhododendron. Our gradual climb brings us to our overnight stop in Deurali.
The walk to Machhapuchare Base Camp will be a challenge today, navigating a boulder-strewn riverbed followed by a steep climb. The unfolding views of Machhapuchare are spectacular, as well as the snowy peaks that emerge to surround us on all sides.
The terrain is starkly different from the verdant green hillsides now as we approach the sanctuary, encountering our first views of glacial moraine. Annapurna south towers before us as we approach the sanctuary, arriving eventually at a remarkable viewpoint where a 360 degree panorama can be had including the peaks of Machhapuchare, Annapurna south, Huichuli, and a host of others.
After a spectacular sunrise, we’ll begin our descent out of the sanctuary, which will feel much easier than the previous days due to the decrease in altitude. Passing back through Deurali, Dovan, and Bamboo, we’ll return into the lush world of the Annapurna foothills, descending into a valley flanked by two tremendous waterfalls beneath a skyline dominated by Huichuli and Machhapuchare.
Descending via Sinuwa to lower Chomrong, we’ll climb a challenging stretch of stone steps to upper Chomrong. The trail continues on to JhinuDanda, where welcome relief can be found at the hot springs just a short walk from the village.
Leaving the towering peaks behind us, we continue the descent past Kyumi village and Sayali Bazaar. We’ll reach Nayapul via Birethanti to board our bus to Pokhara. After the short drive to Pokhara, we’ll arrive in time to enjoy an evening meal and relax around the shores of beautiful Fewa Lake.
After breakfast, we’ll board our bus bound for Kathmandu, arriving in the evening in time to relax in Thamel and enjoy a farewell dinner.
Take care of any last minute shopping or sightseeing as time permits. You’ll be picked up at your hotel three hours prior to your departure flight. Thanks for traveling with Purple Journeys. Farewell and Namaste.
